Course of studies, specific field and terms:
  • Master Nutritional Medicine 2023 (compulsory), interdisciplinary competence, 4th semester
  • Master Nutritional Medicine 2019 (compulsory), interdisciplinary competence, 4th semester
Classes and lectures:
  • Scientific writing (seminar, 2 SWS)
  • Design and analysis of scientific publications (lecture, 2 SWS)
Workload:
  • 90 Hours private studies
  • 60 Hours in-classroom work
Contents of teaching:
  • Publication of scientific studies, including structuring and writing of a scientific article, scientific journals and their procedures
  • Design of scientific study, ethical approvals for animal and human studies
  • The peer review process, including critical analysis of publications and studies, the post-publication peer review process, and aspects of Open Science
  • Scientific misconduct, good scientific practice, and the retraction of articles
  • Applications for research funding, including curriculum vitae
Qualification-goals/Competencies:
  • The students will be able to critically assess the design of scientific studies, including the ethical, statistical and legal framework
  • They can critically assess published work of other authors and discuss the scientific content.
  • They can assemble data for a scientific publication and draft the written framework for such a manuscript.

Module examination(s):
- EW5410-L1: Scientific Writing in Nutritional Medicine, Portfolio exam consisting of: 5 points in the form of a self-written first manuscript draft in compliance with the deadline, 4 points in the form of a peer review of a second manuscript in compliance with the deadline and 11 points in the form of submission of final manuscript in compliance with the deadline. The grade is calculated as follows: 10 points for a 4.0, 11 points for a 3.7, 12 points for a 3.3, 13 points for a 3.0, 14 points for a 2.7, 15 points for a 2.3, 16 points for a 2.0, 17 points for a 1.7, 18 points for a 1.3, from 19 points a 1.0.
