Announcement for the Thomas-Fredenhagen Prize 2019 (Kopie 1)

Commendation for exceptional achievement in technology transfer and business collaboration – submissions accepted until 18 March

Since 2016, the Thomas Fredenhagen Prize with an award of € 10,000 has been conferred annually by the Kaufmannschaft zu Lübeck (Mercantile Association of Lübeck), the Prof. Hans-Heinrich Otte Foundation and our Universität zu Lübeck. It is in recognition of exceptional achievements, activities in the field of technology transfer and for patents pending and IP rights acquired. Applications are accepted until 18 March 2019.

The Fredenhagen Prize focuses on the transfer of technology from science to practice and fosters an interdisciplinary perspective. Eligible are institutes and departments of our Universität zu Lübeck that collaborate with businesses. Joint applications by several institutes or departments with business collaborations are permissible.

Thomas Fredenhagen (born 25 October 1627 in Lübeck; died 20 April 1709 ibid.) is counted among business persons who enlivened Lübeck’s industry in the 17th century, courageously hammered out new routes for foreign trade, and switched over from the “Partenreederei” – a legal form of maritime German shipping companies – to one’s own risky but more lucrative shipping business. A Church Warden of the Marien Church since 1680, in 1697 Fredenhagen donated a Baroque style, high altar made of marble acquired from Thomas Quellinus of Antwerp. At the time, this was one of the largest donations ever made to a Lübeck church after the reformation.

The agreement for the Thomas Fredenhagen Prize was executed on 2 March 2016 in the big chamber and in the Fredenhagen Room of the Mercantile Association of Lübeck. Prof. Otte, honourary chair of the certified public accountants BDO AG, signed on behalf of the Prof. Hans-Heinrich Otte Foundation, of which he is the board chairman. Prof. Otte has influenced the history of today’s BDO for more than a half century. A native of Lübeck, he complemented his profession by getting involved in social and cultural aspects of our Hanseatic City.
