This non-profit foundation was set up on 1 February 1980 by Lübeck citizens and institutions to foster the growth of universities and science in the Hanseatic City of Lübeck. Its articles of association are set forth on page 27 of the 1983 news bulletin issued by the Schleswig-Holstein Ministry of Culture. This foundation and the Society of Friends and Patrons of the Universität zu Lübeck coordinate their funding activities, whereby the foundation backs mainly larger projects of general significance. Examples of these are Studium Generale (general university education), an annual guest professorship at the university, and the building of a guest house needed for visiting scientists invited to participate in common research projects, lectures, or scientific exchanges in Lübeck.
