Lübeck University Orchestra

In 1991, a small group of music aficionados studying medicine founded this university orchestra, christening it simply as “The Medical Orchestra”. Since then, we have grown steadily to a stately symphony orchestra with about 60 musicians. Most of our musicians are students, but the ever-changing landscape of the university draws students from other faculties, along with employees, professors, and graduates – all of whom have remained loyal to their orchestra and city. These lay musicians are bound by the joy of music and classical concerts through their respective semester. Our orchestra practices once a week, mostly on Thursdays, in the Institute for Medical History and Science Research. We hold public concerts regularly at the end of each semester in Lübeck and its surrounding areas to the pleasure of our audiences. We also perform at official university functions, like welcoming new students at the start of their first semester or examination festivities.

We complement our own soloists by gladly inviting talented students from the Lübeck Academy of Music for solo concerts. In fact, our orchestra has worked with famous soloists like the clarinettist David Orlowski. Our musicians have been on several concert tours to Estonia, Norway and France. The last one was in September 2015 to Padua, Italy. Since 2008, we have been recognised as a non-profit charitable organisation: Universität zu Lübeck Orchestra e.V.

Fausto Fungaroli took over in the winter semester 2011/2012, as the fourth conductor since the orchestra’s founding.
