In the summer semester of 2016, our Universität zu Lübeck commenced its first ever propaedeutics programme to prepare refugees interested in an education at a university, including guidance on cultural aspects. In addition to an advanced German language course (12 hrs/week), the students attend 24 hrs/week of lectures spanning mathematics, informatics, biology and chemistry.
A coordinator from the faculty is responsible for the content of each course, but bachelor’s and master’s degree students teach and conduct the exercises/labs.
This programme benefits all sides:
The students gain teaching experience, while the refugees benefit not only from fresh and vivacious lectures, but also learn about useful functional aspects of the degree programme and how the university is organised. Since bachelor’s and master’s degree students are in the midst of their university life, they can directly infuse the attendees with their inherent enthusiasm for an education at a university.
This programme is supported by DAAD and the Ministry for Social Affairs, Health, Science and Equal Rights.
The next propaedeutics programme commences in March 2018 and lasts five months, concluding with a final exam.
