UniTransfer Award 2011 for Prof. Dr. Thorsten Buzug

10.000 euro for exemplary project activities of the Institute for Medical Technology and Technology Transfer

Prof. Dr. Thorsten M. Buzug, director of the Institute for Medical Technology of the University of Lübeck, is winner of the Uni Transfer Award 2011. His Institutes' exemplary project activities for technology transfer are being acknowledged by the recognition.

The awarding of the bi-annual 10.000 prize took place on 1 December 2011 in the presence of the minister for science, economy and traffic of the federal state of Schleswig-Holstein, Jost de Jager, in the Multifunction Center (MFC) of the district Hochschulstadtteil Lübeck.  Prof. Dr. Peter Dominiak, president of the University of Lübeck, welcomed to the event. Minister de Jager held a presentation on "Technology Transfer at Universities - an important economic factor".

The activities of the project cluster Magnetic Particle Imaging at the Institute for Medical Technology Lübeck are especially recognized with the Transfer Award 2011. Since the invention of Magnetic Resonance Tomography (MRT) and the Positron-Emission-Tomography (PET) in the 1970s, there was no basically new approach to further improve medical whole-body-imaging. The idea to produce images from the human body with a completely new physical principle came from the Philips research laboratories Hamburg in 2001. The principle of Magnetic Particle Imaging (MPI) relies on the depiction of iron-oxide nanoparticles, is free from harmful, highly energetic radiation and promises a high sensitivity as well as a high temporal and spatial resolution. This is meant to facilitate three-dimensional real-time images, for example of beating hearts and the coronary arteries.
