WHY? – MOTIVATION Critical thinking is not explicitly taught in most academic programs. This is surprising because all successful argumentation is based on critical thinking and scientists in every field frequently have to underpin their positions and ideas with arguments. Moreover, scientists in every field have to identify the weaknesses and strengths in arguments brought forward by other scientists. Making use of important critical thinking tools, in our seminar you will learn to structure your own ideas clearly, to defend them with good arguments, and to understand and adequately evaluate arguments brought forward by others. We will practice oral as well as written forms of argumentation. WHAT? – CONTENT ? What exactly is an argument? ? How does critical thinking help me to make convincing arguments? ? What kinds of arguments are there? ? On what three levels can I evaluate arguments? ? What classical fallacies should I definitely avoid? ? Why should I listen actively in order to argue convincingly? ? What scientifically important argumentation strategies should I know? ? How do I analyze complex relationships of justification with reconstruction tools from critical thinking? ? How do I present my arguments poignantly in scientific contexts (both orally and in written form)? HOW? – METHOD The seminar is interactive through and through. After short presentations by your trainers, you have the opportunity to partake in many exercises, intended to improve your skills of sound argumentation in writing as well as orally. Till Hopfe and Adem Mulamustafi? will co-teach the seminar; co-teaching will make the seminar livelier, elucidate the contents from different perspectives, and especially do more justice to your individual needs.
