This course is a rollercoaster ride through the fundamentals of descriptive statistics (i.e., describing and better understanding our data samples by numbers and graphs) and inference statistics (i.e., drawing conclusions about our target population based on these sampled data). We will also brush up on concepts of probability and research design as we need them.
The course is intended for:
· those who want to refresh old memories on statistics and those who missed out on some of these basics before, as well as
· those who want to deepen their understanding of parsimonious procedures in biostatistics, like regression, multifactorial ANOVA; want to get a better understanding of how data can be modelled in general; how sample size can be calculated; and what alternatives to standard ("parametric") procedures are available (nonparametric tests, permutation tests, bootstrapping).
The course will be taught in English, but in the small-group exercises we are happy to switch to German, so no worries if your English is a bit rusty. Statistics are easier to comprehend in English anyways.
For a preliminary assessment of your skills and your expectations regarding the course, we ask you to fill out a questionnaire which you can find after your enrolment in the subsection "Material".
Filling out this questionnaire is mandatory for attending the biostats course.
