Saša Stanišić was born in 1978 in Višegrad, Bosnia Herzegovina. He had to flee to escape the war and has been living in Germany since 1992. His published his first novel in 2006, “Wie der Soldat das Grammofon repariert” (How the soldier repaired a gramophone). This literary treatment of experiences bound with his family history excited readers and critics equally and was translated into 31 languages. His second novel, “Vor dem Fest” (Before the Celebration), appeared in 2014 and is set in Northeast Germany’s rustic Uckermark microcosm called Fürstenfelde. This also became a bestseller and won many awards, including the renowned Alfred Döblin Prize and the Leipzig Book Fair Prize.
In 2016, he released his polyphonic volume of narratives, entitled Fallensteller (Trap Setter), which was again euphorically celebrated by Feuilleton writers. "Is Saša Stanišić now a trap setter, an illusionist, a master at disguise and trickery? He is simply our best narrator, who transforms all great literature into the perfect magic trick: everyone knows, it is just language, and yet it seems so real.” (Richard Kämmerlings, Die Welt)
The purpose of our readings is to extract the aesthetic rules of the literary artistry of passionate storytellers, as accurately as possible. The plan is to also have the author read selected passages from his works for us on 14 May 2017 at 2 pm, as a crowning conclusion to our seminar.
